Four Things I Dislike About Country Music

I love country music from the cowboy boots to the pedal steel guitars, but here are somethings I don't love about it:

4) All the trucks. They're not fuel efficient, and encourage a dependence on foreign oil or destroying our own environment to find more of it here. Neither of which seem to jive with "country values."

3) "The Man in Black." I love Johnny Cash, but I absolutely can't stand people who claim that they hate country, but love Johnny Cash because he's the man in black. How many of these people own any of his old CDs, and like anything other than a) his mystique, which seems a bit forced to me, and b) one of the Rick Rubin-produced covers. They'll tell you they like the old stuff because of that "song where he shoots the man in Reno just to watch him die!" Not that those Rick Rubin discs aren't pretty good, but I think you see what I mean here. PS the movie was just OK.

2) The blind flag waving and jingoism. I thought country was supposed to have a rebellous streak?

1) Multimillionaires pretending to be regular dudes and gals with their drawling and fake folksy language. See anytime there is a combo of Gretchen Wilson, Big and Rich, Kid Rock and/or Hank Jr. on the screen together.

I'll assume it was 2 months "drying out" somewhere. Country music sucks. Good to have you back

Country fans, are for the most part bandwagon fans. It wasn't until the early 90's when Garth Brooks sung about his friends in low places did people actually begin to tune into their local radio station.

Now you have country acts, trying to cross over:

*cough*

Dixie Chicks - because they can't keep their opinions to themselves

Tim and Faith Hill - because they are greed filled spirits, just look at their $85.00 per ticket price tag to get verification of that.

*cough*

You walk up to a "country fan" and ask them who Hank Thompson is or who The Kendalls were, and all they can do is look at you with a blank look on their face and say "Who's dat?" not "Who's that?" but "Who's dat?".

Talk about a regression in modern musical society.

"We play both kinds of music, Country and Western."

I just can't get into it. To me it feels like it has been hijacked from it Irish roots and forced into porn. Not that there are not somethings I like. I have to be in the right frame of mind to listen. During the summer for some reason I can listen to the older country and some bluegrass. Tom Jones, Hank Williams the Elder, Jerry Reed, the Red Headed Stranger and the Man in Black. There is a term in latin to describe today's country music, crapy crap crap. Some of perpatrators are guys who just Green Day in a Chevy truck. That is how awful you sound to me.

4) What is up with the trucks. It would not kill you to drive something that you do not have to fill up just to get to the other island at the gas station. But, I can see it being a problem for some. I don't think you would have much "dusty trail cred" if you rolled up to the rodeo in a Honda Accord. Or if you were mending fences in a Ford Focus. I am just saying.

3) I hear what you are saying, but I do enjoy Johnny's music. Not just because he has done a better version of "Hurt" than Trent Reznor. He is a great story teller and an American Orginal. I love The Ballad or Ira Hayes, The Rebel - Johnny Yuma, One Piece at a Time, and so on. Sadly, I love that the Beastie Boys used "just to watch him die" in "Hello Brooklyn" on Paul's Boutique.

2) Look on the bright side, with them waving American Flags, some of them may finally realize that the South lost the Civil War.

1) Down home folk my ass. You hit that one on the head sir. Kenny Cheseynutz ever hang with real people no. Do you think Big and Rich are standing in line that Red Lion getting their groceries. No but hopfully soon they will be back to working at the Red Lion. I could go on and on. All of them are phony, not real like the BRG.

Watched some of CMA show this week because I used to know the cohost, and I just kept saying, "This is just bad pop-rock with cowboy hats and southern accents." Seriously, there's not that much country about most of today's country music.

Why should the Dixie Chicks keep their opinions to themselves more than, say, Toby Keith?

Johnny Cash's stuff for Sun can't be beat. Also, his duet with Oscar the Grouch on "Nasty Dan" had an indelible impression on me, for obvious reasons.
